Prof. Tomás Epeldegui – Biography
Prof. Tomás Epeldegui completed his university studies at the Complutense University of Madrid and obtained his doctoral degree from the Autonomous University of Madrid. He served as a senior registrar at Hospital La Paz in Madrid before becoming the Head of the Department of Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at Hospital Niño Jesús in Madrid.
He has contributed extensively to the field as an editor and associate editor of several books, authored chapters in multiple publications, and published papers in various journals.
Prof. Epeldegui played a key role in the advancement of paediatric orthopaedics in Spain, founding the Spanish Society of Paediatric Orthopaedics. He has been actively involved in EPOS, serving as a board member, general secretary, and EPOS President from 2010 to 2011.
Beyond his academic and institutional contributions, he is the founder of Cirujanos Ortopédicos de España para el Mundo (COEM), a humanitarian organisation providing specialised orthopaedic care in underserved regions. COEM has established orthopaedic surgery services in Cameroon, particularly in Dschang, where it collaborates with local hospitals to treat conditions such as osteomyelitis, paediatric deformities, and trauma-related injuries. The organisation also supports medical training and sustainable healthcare initiatives.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he is this year’s EPOS Humanitarian Award recipient.
